What type of shoulder injury is bursitis?

A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion between bones, tendons, and muscles in the body. Bursae help to reduce friction and allow for smooth movement of the joints and surrounding tissues.

There are more than 150 bursae in the human body, the largest and most well-known bursae are located near the major joints such as the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. However, bursae can be found throughout the body, including in the hands, feet and spine.

What are the symptoms?

When a bursa becomes inflamed or irritated, it can cause a condition known as bursitis. Bursitis can cause pain, swelling and tenderness in the affected area, and can be caused by overuse, injury or underlying medical conditions like arthritis.

Bursitis treatment and prevention

Treatment for this type of shoulder injury typically involves rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as the RICE method) to reduce pain and swelling. In some cases, medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to help reduce pain and inflammation. More severe cases may require corticosteroid injections or even surgery to remove damaged bursa tissue.

Preventing shoulder bursitis involves taking steps to avoid overuse or repetitive motions that put strain on the joints and surrounding tissues. This might include the patient learning to maintain proper posture and body mechanics during physical activity, gradually increasing the intensity or duration of exercise, and incorporating stretching and strengthening exercises into their routine.
