Facet joint arthropathy is a condition that affects the facet joints in your spine. These joints are located between each vertebra and allow your spine to move and bend. Arthropathy refers to joint disease or damage.
Facet joint arthropathy occurs when the cartilage that cushions the facet joints wears away, causing bone-on-bone contact between the vertebrae. This can result in pain and stiffness in your back and may even lead to the development of bone spurs.
Facet joint arthropathy is commonly caused by degeneration with aging, wear and tear, or injury.
Common facet joint arthropathy symptoms include localised back or neck pain, stiffness when bending or twisting, and discomfort that increases after standing or sitting for long periods.
Some people may experience pain radiating into the buttocks, thighs, or shoulders, depending on which spinal region is affected. Morning stiffness and difficulty straightening up after rest are also typical. Because these symptoms can resemble other causes of back pain, such as disc problems or arthritis, a thorough assessment is important for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of spinal joint degeneration.
Treatment may include physiotherapy, pain medication, or injections to reduce inflammation and relieve painIf you have recurring back or neck pain, or any of the other symptoms listed above, one of our qualified physiotherapists can help.
