What is a lumbar facet joint sprain?

A lumbar facet joint sprain is a common injury that affects the small joints in the lower back, called the lumbar facet joints. You may hear it referred to as a lower back sprain.

The lumbar facet joints are located on either side of the spine and connect the vertebrae together, allowing for movement and flexibility in your lower back.

A facet joint sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the joint become stretched or torn, typically as a result of sudden twisting or bending. This can cause pain and stiffness in the lower back, as well as tenderness and swelling around the affected joint.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of a lumbar facet joint sprain can include:

  • Lower back pain that may be sharp or achy
  • Stiffness or decreased range of motion in the lower back
  • Pain that worsens with certain movements or positions, such as bending, twisting or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Tenderness or swelling around the affected joint
  • Muscle spasms in the lower back
  • Radiating pain or tingling sensations in the buttocks or legs (if the sprain is severe or affects a nerve root)

Lumbar facet joint sprain treatment

Treatment for a lumbar facet joint sprain typically involves a combination of rest, physiotherapy and pain management. In some cases, a brace or supportive device may be recommended to help stabilise the affected joint while it heals.

Most people with a lumbar facet joint sprain will recover fully within a few weeks to a few months with appropriate treatment and self-care measures.
