Mastitis occurs when there is a blocked milk duct or inflammation surrounding the milk ducts in the breast tissue. This causes reduced of a reduction in the flow of milk when feeding your baby or expressing milk.
This can happen at any time in your breastfeeding journey but is more likely in the first 6-8 weeks post birth, while your milk supply is being established. Our specially trained women’s physiotherapist can help relieve the symptoms of mastitis with safe, targeted treatment.
Mastitis can be very painful and make you feel quite unwell if left untreated. In addition to pain while feeding or pumping, you can generally see and feel a painful red lump developing in your breast, as well as experiencing sore nipples, hot skin on your breast and flu-like symptoms (including headaches, fever, chills and a general feeling of unwellness).
If you come for treatment with our women’s health physio in Perth, this may include ultrasound therapy to reduce inflammation and help unblock the duct, alongside massage and drainage techniques.
She can also provide guidance on optimal feeding positions, the use of hot or cold therapy and provide supportive taping techniques to aid your recovery. If needed, a referral to a lactation consultant can also be provided if you require additional support. At the end of the day, mastitis is no fun when you have a newborn to take care of, and we will do all we can to help you make a quick recovery.
