What is it?

Vaginal prolapse occurs when pelvic organs (bladder, bowel or uterus) start to descend towards the vaginal opening. This is due to increased stretch of the tissues that support these organs. This can occur as a result of trauma e.g., vaginal delivery, or can occur due to repetitive heavy lifting e.g., gym/occupation.

Vaginal prolapse can also occur as part of the menopausal changes that women experience around the ages of 45-55.

Symptoms of vaginal prolapse

A feeling of fullness or dragging in the vagina and/or lower pelvis is a common symptom of prolapse, along with a lump or bulge in the opening. Lower back, pelvis and groin discomfort may also be present, along with a disruption to normal urinary function.

Physio treatment for vaginal prolapse

Our physio for vaginal prolapse will involve a pelvic floor muscle assessment and measurement of the prolapse, along with ultrasound scanning of the lower abdomen and perineum.

Pelvic floor strengthening exercises and a tailored exercise prescription support recovery, while fitting of a vaginal support pessary may be recommended if appropriate. Lifestyle management and guidance on bladder and bowel health, including constipation management, will also be offered.
